Going, Going, GONE! The Perils of Sports Injuries

There’s nothing as fun as charging after the ball, outpacing an opponent and adding to the score for your team. In North Dallas, sports are in full swing and, along with the joys of playing the game, come the dangers of injury.

Sports-related injuries are a top reason for visits to Advance ER where athletes of all ages can be seen by a board-certified physician within minutes of arrival anytime day or night. “Sports injuries can range from minor bruises, sprains and strains to major fractures, dislocations or tears,” said Advance ER physician Dr. Brian King. “We take athletes’ health as seriously as they do and we will work to help them get started on the road to healing.”

If you’re an athlete and you are injured, here are 5 things to do right away:

  1. Keep the injured area immobile. Have a friend or coach help you stabilize it with a wrap, if possible. If it hurts to move it, don’t move it.
  2. Have a coach, medic or adult friend help you take a quick assessment of your injuries so you know how to move.
  3. Ice a contusion, swollen ankle, sprained knee or wrist. Apply pressure to a cut that is bleeding. Immobilize a fracture and leave it alone, especially if it is a compound fracture with visible bone and bleeding.
  4. Get to Advance ER. If you can walk, have someone help you to the car and drive you to the nearest Advance ER where you know you can be seen right away.
  5. Follow up with your doctor’s instructions, possibly following the RICE model of: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

What you can expect at Advance ER

As an athlete, you’ve spent hours training for your event. Now that you’re injured, you want to know you’re in the hands of someone who is as committed to their field as you are on your field. Advance ER is proud to employ only board-certified physicians, with an average of 15 or more years of experience, to treat our patients.

“As a team of leading physicians, we’re committed to providing the best service possible to our patients. We don’t stop until we know the patient understands his instructions and knows what to do to start to heal,” said Dr. King. “I think Advance ER is one of the best things to happen to North Dallas for a long time and we couldn’t be more convenient for patients suffering from sports injuries.”

If your injury requires a specialist, our SPECIALIST NOWSM program can give your child a rapid assessment from a Children’s Health™ specialist from the comforts of Advance ER. “This ground-breaking service is one of the many things that really set Advance ER apart from the rest,” said Dr. King. “We’re preparing online access to many more specialists for adult patients very soon.”

With the convenience of on-site imaging equipment, fast-results labs and patients’ pharmacy, your injury can be treated in a streamlined fashion. “We keep appropriate pain medication with advanced splinting and compression wraps on hand,” said Dr. King. “Patients have told me that it’s nice to know they can just come to Advance ER and leave the rest up to us.”
