About Our Children's Emergency Care
Advance ER has specialized medical facilities equipped to handle urgent medical situations involving children. Our departments cater specifically to the unique needs of infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents. We're staffed with healthcare professionals trained in pediatric emergency medicine, ensuring specialized care for various pediatric emergencies.
Here are some common types of injuries and conditions treated in children's emergency rooms:
- Abdominal Pain: Could be caused by various issues such as appendicitis, gastroenteritis, or urinary tract problems.
- Broken Bones: Fractures and sprains from falls, sports injuries, or accidents.
- Flu: Severe cases of influenza leading to dehydration, breathing difficulties, or other complications.
- Dehydration: Commonly due to illnesses causing vomiting and diarrhea, requiring intravenous fluids.
- Severe Fever: High fevers, often signaling an underlying infection or illness.
- Concussions: Head injuries resulting from falls, collisions, or sports accidents that may cause altered mental status or loss of consciousness.
- Wounds: Cuts, lacerations, and puncture wounds that may require stitches or other wound care.
- Respiratory Issues: Asthma attacks, difficulty breathing, or other respiratory conditions.
- Allergic Reactions: Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to foods, insect stings, or other allergens. A fever is not typically present with an allergic reaction, but with the new COVID-19 variant (also called “Cicada”) patients may experience a fever with evolving symptom patterns similar to that of allergies . While many cases remain mild, patients experiencing worsening respiratory symptoms, chest discomfort, or prolonged illness should come to Advance ER to be evaluated promptly.
- Poisoning: Accidental ingestion of toxic substances or overdose requiring immediate medical attention.
- Seizures: Sudden, abnormal electrical activity in the brain leading to convulsions or loss of consciousness.
- Burns: Thermal, chemical, or electrical burns requiring specialized care and treatment.
- Severe Infections: Serious bacterial or viral infections requiring immediate medical intervention.
- Trauma: Any severe injury caused by accidents like motor vehicle crashes, falls, or physical assaults.
Our facility has specialized equipment, medications, and trained staff to handle pediatric-specific medical emergencies. We aim not only to treat the immediate issue but also to provide comprehensive care considering the unique needs and developmental stages of children.

Why a Freestanding ER Is the Right Choice for Pediatric Emergencies in Dallas
Many Dallas parents default to urgent care for childhood illness and injury because it feels like the practical option. But urgent cares operate under a different licensure than emergency rooms and can’t treat the full range of conditions children actually present with. Advance ER is a freestanding emergency room, which means we can handle anything from a common fever to a seizure, a severe allergic reaction, or trauma requiring imaging and IV treatment, all under one roof.
Here’s what sets Advance ER apart for pediatric urgent care and emergency visits:
- Board-Certified Emergency Physicians: Every child is evaluated by a board-certified ER physician supported by physician assistants and certified nurse practitioners. These aren’t general practitioners filling urgent care shifts.
- Specialists Now Access: Through our Children’s Health Care Network membership, our physicians can connect with pediatric emergency medicine specialists from Children’s Medical Center Dallas and Plano in minutes, at no extra cost to you.
- On-Site Diagnostics Built for Speed: CT, X-ray, and ultrasound are available 24/7. Our CLIA and COLA-certified lab returns most results in approximately 15 minutes, supporting accurate treatment decisions without unnecessary delays.
- Pediatric-Specific Environment & Equipment: Our pediatric-themed exam room and age-appropriate equipment are designed to reduce anxiety for children and support accurate assessment across every age group, from infants through adolescents.
- Private Rooms and Concierge-Level Care: Families are seen in private rooms with individualized attention, not a shared waiting area.
- Full Severity Spectrum: From a laceration that won’t stop bleeding to a child showing signs of anaphylaxis or a first-time seizure, we’re equipped to stabilize and treat without the limitations of urgent care scope.
Children’s anatomy, physiology, and medication dosing differ from adults, so pediatric care requires age-appropriate equipment, assessment, and treatment plans tailored to each child’s developmental stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I give my child fever-reducing medication before coming to the ER?
Yes, it’s generally appropriate to give an age-appropriate dose of acetaminophen or ibuprofen (if over 6 months old) to help keep your child more comfortable and to help with pain before you travel to the ER. However, don’t delay coming to the ER if your child is very ill or their symptoms are severe.
If my child hits their head, what symptoms indicate an ER visit is necessary over just home monitoring?
Seek emergency care immediately if your child experiences loss of consciousness, repeated vomiting, a severe headache, confusion, difficulty walking or balancing, or any change in behavior or excessive sleepiness after a head injury.
When does a cut or laceration on a child require stitches, and is the ER the best place for that?
A cut may require ER treatment if it’s deep, long, gaping open, on the face or a joint, or if the bleeding can’t be stopped with firm pressure after several minutes.
