Back-to-School Health Tips

Protecting Your Child’s Health at School

This school year looks different for Dallas students, as they transition back to the classroom after a year of virtual learning. Between adjusting to a new schedule and a new set of school guidelines, here are some tips to ensure your little ones are safe.

1. Personal & School Health Guidelines

We’ve seen how many times the state of the COVID-19 pandemic has shifted over the past year and a half — making it challenging for parents to stay on top of the most relevant information when it comes to your child’s health.

Make sure that your children continue to follow common health guidelines such as mask-wearing, social distancing, and handwashing — but also make sure to stay in the loop with any local ordinances and health guideline changes.

2. Update Emergency Contact Information

In light of an emergency in school, it’s important to make sure your information is accurately recorded with your child’s teacher and school nurse. Many families may have relocated over the past year, so now is a good time to make sure that addresses, phone numbers, and emergency contacts are all updated.

3. Manage Existing Conditions

While many parents will likely be worried primarily about the spread of COVID-19 in Dallas classrooms, it’s also important to remember to manage any existing conditions your little one may have. This includes diabetes, allergies, and other diseases that require medication to be kept at school.

Wellness Visits & Vaccination Records

In addition, the Dallas ISD encourages parents to vaccinate their children early to avoid waiting for appointments. Ensure that your child is healthy and protected by scheduling a wellness visit and updating their immunization record with their school nurse.
