Warning Signs of a Severe Reaction

When your tongue feels thick after eating some fruit, when your throat feels tight after a bee sting, or when your heart races after taking some medications, you could be experiencing a severe reaction.  A severe reaction can occur at any time and can be caused by anything from medication to bee stings to food allergies.

“When an irritant is in the bloodstream, the body can react in mild, moderate or severe ways,” said Advance ER physician Dr. Thomas Allen. “When you start to feel a tightness in your mouth and throat or have trouble breathing or staying alert, it’s time to head to the nearest ER, preferably Advance ER.”

Warning signs for a severe reaction:

  • Swelling
  • Dizziness
  • Hives or itching
  • Redness, itching or swelling at a bite site
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Weakness
  • Rapid pulse
  • Diahrrea
  • Stomach cramps or leg cramps
  • Headache
  • Sweating or chills
  • Wheezing or coughing
  • Shock

Meet Dr. Allen:

Thomas Allen, M.D., FACEP, is board-certified in emergency medicine. He received his medical degree from Oregon Health Science University, Portland, OR. He completed his internship at the Legacy Health Systems’ Emanuel and Good Samaritan Hospitals, Portland, OR, and his residency at the University of Texas at Houston Herman Hospitals, Houston, TX.

Dr. Allen has been practicing for over two decades. He and his family are active in their Dallas community and love being a part of the neighborhood.
