When people think about emergency medicine, they often picture the moments that happen after someone walks through the doors of an emergency room. A sudden injury, an unexpected illness, or another medical situation that cannot wait often brings people to the ER.
What often goes unnoticed are the physicians behind those moments.
At Advance ER, our physicians bring decades of experience to every shift, but they are also mentors, community members, musicians, and neighbors. The perspectives they gain outside the emergency room shape how they lead inside it, influencing how they communicate, work as a team, and care for every patient who comes through our doors.
As we continue finding new ways to connect with the Dallas community, we wanted to introduce two physicians whose careers reflect those values: Dr. Larry Pettit and Dr. Allen.
Their stories remind us that leadership in medicine isn't only measured by years in practice. It is also built through service, compassion, curiosity, and a commitment to the community.
Leadership in Emergency Medicine Starts Long Before an Emergency
Emergency medicine is a field shaped by variety. Every shift brings different patients, different concerns, and different decisions. One patient may arrive after a sports injury, while another needs immediate evaluation for chest pain or difficulty breathing. Physicians are constantly assessing new information, working alongside nurses and clinical staff, and helping patients understand what is happening during stressful situations.
That environment calls for more than medical knowledge. It requires clear communication, sound judgment, and the ability to lead with confidence while remaining approachable.
We believe those qualities don't begin when a shift starts. They are developed over years of caring for patients, collaborating with healthcare teams, and staying connected to the people and communities we serve throughout Dallas.
Different Journeys, Shared Purpose
Although Dr. Pettit and Dr. Allen have taken different paths throughout their careers, they share a common philosophy: every patient deserves thoughtful care and honest communication.
Dr. Pettit has spent more than 25 years in emergency medicine after completing his training in a Level I Trauma Center. That experience shaped his ability to stay calm during urgent situations while still taking time to listen and communicate with patients.
Dr. Allen brings more than two decades of emergency and trauma medicine experience, including leadership roles as Medical Director for a Level II Trauma Center and an air ambulance service. Along the way, he has developed a broad perspective on healthcare that extends beyond treating today's emergency.
Together, they represent the collaborative approach that defines our physician team, bringing different experiences together with one shared goal: caring for patients when they need it most.
Dr. Pettit: Finding Rhythm in Medicine & Music
For Dr. Larry Pettit, both emergency medicine and music rely on focus, preparation, and teamwork. As the drummer for The Rust Band, he performs classic rock throughout the Dallas area and at events across Texas, including local favorites like the Park Cities Fourth of July festivities. While emergency medicine and drumming might seem worlds apart, both rely on deep preparation, unspoken trust, and the ability to adapt when things change in an instant.
Whether coordinating care alongside nurses and technicians in a fast-paced ER or keeping time with his bandmates on stage, Dr. Pettit sees both roles as a natural extension of teamwork and community connection.
Dr. Allen: Looking Beyond Today's Emergency
While emergency care focuses on the critical moments happening right now, Dr. Thomas Allen encourages patients to think about what comes next.
Beyond addressing urgent needs, he takes time to discuss proactive wellness and overall health strategies, helping patients feel informed and confident about their ongoing care. That forward-looking perspective naturally extends into the Dallas community. In 2026, he served as Advance ER’s Community Partners of Dallas donor physician, supporting local children through the organization’s annual backpack initiative.
Whether supporting local youth, spending time on his ranch in Howe, or enjoying the North Texas outdoors, Dr. Allen brings a practical, grounded approach to caring for families both inside and outside the emergency room.
What Community Means to Our Physicians
Healthcare is deeply connected to the communities it serves.
Our physicians treat teachers, first responders, business owners, students, grandparents, young families, and visitors from every corner of Dallas. Many of those patients are part of the same neighborhoods, schools, parks, and local events that make the communities unique.That shared connection matters. What can be harder to find is perspective. Physicians who have spent decades caring for patients bring insights that go beyond textbooks or headlines. They have seen how medical decisions affect real families, how healthcare continues to evolve, and how small conversations can make an important difference in a patient's experience.
Looking Ahead: Launching This August
The stories of Dr. Pettit and Dr. Allen are just two examples of the people behind the care at Advance ER. Every member of our physician team brings a unique background, different experiences, and valuable perspectives shaped by years of caring for patients and giving back to the communities they call home.
We look forward to sharing more of those conversations through a new physician podcast planned for launch this month. Rather than focusing only on emergency medicine, the series will explore leadership, community involvement, patient education, and the experiences that continue to shape our physicians both inside and outside the ER.
